Quit It! / Spilling Out
Born out of the recent pandemic times, Quit It! rose from the ashes of previous punk project River Jacks…minus the accordion. Quit It! debuted their self titled EP in December of 2020, and have been at it full force ever since. Continuing the socio-political anthemic punk that they began with on the self titled EP they continue to deliver songs that get you thinking, drinking, foot stomping, hugging or fighting...now that’s up to you.
Now Quit It! bands latest release titled,
Spilling Out was released in October of 2022 recorded at Meter Records and released with Wasted Wax Records. Produced by Jesse Gander at Rain City Recorders and Mastered by Stu McKillop at RailTown Mastering in Vancouver. Spilling Out delivers just as much punch and keeps the anthems going strong, all the while creating awareness, and change through their music, yet still having a rip roaring good time. Full of heart yet disdain for the societal bullshit. Gosh I love this band!
How do you narrow things down when every track rocks your socks off? Just barely but I picked these gems….
‘Taikon Mi’ the track name has an interesting fun fact...something about being annoyed with how many times A-ha’s Take on Me was heard in a very short period of time. All jokes aside ‘Taikon Mi’ questions things, questions life but has an uplifting hopeful vibe. From the sick drumbeat to the lyrics, “I’m not gonna break so easily”. Full feeling behind the lyrics. The harmonies and layers to the vocals are so pleasing to the ear. This track also features special guest vocals by Sarah from Alien Boy and Ryaan from Aanthem. When I’m down in the dumps this one is my pick me up…okay the whole album is but it starts with this one.
‘Tectonic’ the sweet guitar intro and single then double snare beats into a big drum roll that’s kicks it all in. Here we have the most epic end of the world song or if your day feels like the end of the world this one will certainly do. No matter what darkness Quit it! may sing about it’s the tempo, harmonies, and sing-a-longs give me some hope that I will somehow survive…and if I don’t atleast I have these words… “and at the end of the world, you can let down your curls. Think of your favourite song and we’ll be gone-singing along”
‘Mugs’ has the most excellent lyric video giving the perspective of a day in the life of a coffee mug mixed with great shots of the band playing. I’ve come to know their music videos for making an impact and a statement this video was showed a little bit of a lighter side. “I remember when I was young and in the brink of losing faith” and “Set a reminder, pull up your anchor because without you I’m left with nothing to lose” Even if they sing about dark stuff or sad stuff ,they make it all better with their upbeat tempos, layered vocals and harmonies. Yay your tapping your toes along to it right now. This one just hits my heart.
‘Guys and Glory’ a haunting humming and a pretty piano introduction flows into what is one the most heartfelt drinking and dancing songs on the album. I don’t even drink but that tempo makes me want to dance, mosh and rip it up, then afterwards sit down for and hear some good stories from Spencer Jo and the guys. The story telling element of this song, “And if you think you know me and my friends, I’ll tell you how it all begins”, and “Sooner or later we’re gonna fight/lose/love somebody. What are we fighting for?” The go big or go home. It’s the anthemic sing-a-long, big bass lines, the beat. This song is everything I love about this band. There’s a lot of heart in there.
Quit It! has just announced their cross Canada tour to promote Spilling Out. Be sure to catch them if they’re passing through your city or town. Their love show is definitely one you need to experience for yourself. The energy of it is nothing short of mind blowing!
I love this band and can’t wait to see them play live again.
Enjoy and be good to each other!
Love Always,
Green Noreen
