The Static Shift
By MIMIMAY
The Static Shift is a local canadian rock and roll trio- with a new single coming out April 18th
after previous rock albums and singles.
The goal with The Static Shift’s latest new single was to honour an iconic song of Jimi
Hendrix’s- Voodoo Child; while bringing forward the energy of one of their live shows. Even
more incredible, this was all recorded live off the floor with engineer Tobias Kalden in
Langdon.
One of the factors that makes their tracks so captivating is how they balance the instruments
in recordings. The Static Shift perfectly enhances the sound of their bass and drums as well
as every other sensational instrumentation recorded.
Part of this instrumentation is absolutely the vocals and guitar done by Mitchell Brady. The
work done by him to honour Jimi Henderix is flawless. Starting from the very beginning of the
song, it is sure proven Mitchell enchants the song with his full effort in vocals and guitar.
Not only with this cover, Mitchell Brady brings excitement and energy to shows the band
opens, and their two released albums and four singles.
Now, we all know bass really brings together everything right?
Let’s talk about Kyle Tenove, who really does that and so much more.
In my own research and listening to The Static Shift’s music, it is honestly clear that Kyle is
god damn amazing at what he does. The bass lines in all of their music speaks out perfectly,
and this cover is absolutely no exception. His work is truly an inspiration to bass players- and
really any musician.
I find that one of the most important factors in this band are, of course, the drums. With
Taylor Miles on drums, The Static Shift is perfect. The idea of covering Voodoo Child to
honour it really shines through how he pulls together the music in the band. While listening
to the cover and other albums of theirs, I really couldn’t help but look forward to how the
drums fit perfectly alongside the rest of the band. Enhanced, without shadowing others..
Through the band’s intention while playing music, The Static Shift is able to brighten up
any atmosphere or venue they play with these factors. I am incredibly excited to see them
live soon, and very much looking forward to seeing what they put out in the future. The Static
Shift really is making this Edmonton music scene a whole lot better.
