INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW - ISMENA (Amsterdam)

INTERNATIONAL INTERVIEW - ISMENA (Amsterdam)

Interview with Amsterdam artist for Edmontons music magazine

o Your music is often described as dreamy and melancholic. What draws you to that sound?

It's very much who I am as a person. The music that I make is an honest reflection of who I am and what I feel.

o How do personal experiences shape your songwriting process?

My personal experiences are a huge part of my songwriting process. Songwriting is a way of processing my emotions, a lot of life events will sooner or later become a song. It really helps me deal with whatever comes on my path. But I also draw a lot of inspiration from outside factors like nature or the things that are happening in the world.

o What story were you hoping to tell with Be My Water?

The story of 'Be My Water' is coming home to someone you love after a long day. The office sounds at the beginning are recorded at a music shop where I used to work and it's meant to give a sense of overstimulation followed by a sense of calm.

o Looking back at This Time, what did that album teach you as an artist

'This Time' was the first album on which I felt like I really found my own sound. Before that I was still finding out who I am and what kind of music I wanted to make.

'This Time' taught me to be true to myself and embrace the quiet and calm of my music and who I am as a person.

o Your lyrics feel very intimate. Is vulnerability important to your music?

Yes, it's very important. I feel like music is a safe space in which I can say what I truly feel. That is something that is harder for me to do in real life. I also feel like I'm taking back power when I'm vulnerable and honest. I can turn bad experiences into something positive and I can make positive moments even more positive by turning them into music.

o How has your sound evolved since your earlier releases like Heaven?

I was searching for my sound and I feel like you can hear that in all the earlier releases. And I love that the search for my sound and who I am is captured in music. It makes me happy and proud to be where I am now.

o With your upcoming album, what can listeners expect that feels new or different?

I recorded a lot of my surroundings, I wanted to use my environment as a way to make the music even more intimate. This way I'm inviting listeners into my world. I also experimented with synth sounds and added a lot of subtle details to the music.
