INTERVIEW - LUSHCLOT
INTERVIEW - LUSHCLOT

1. How did you all meet each other?
Tom: I met Nathan in the early to mid 2000s when our bands would play shows together. Even back then we would be teased that we look related. RH and I met through work and connected over an appreciation of good music and wacky gear. I met Rocky through a mutual friend. I had put the feelers out looking for a singer for a new project. They recommended her, I thought no way she would have time. But sent some demos over, met for coffee, and she was down.
2. Who writes the lyrics, and what usually inspires them?
Rocky: I write the lyrics, but they come last. To begin with, I use the instrumentation as cues for how my vocals will follow. So at practice, I will just yell and groan, and eventually, notate all of it. By then, a specific mood, emotion and imagery will have developed and inspired the words.
Most of the lyrics don’t follow a linear narrative, but they all revolve around specific themes. “Glory Mole” for example, is one of the few actual narrative songs, about the complex mesh of feelings and power dynamics I felt hitching a random ride downtown when I was 20 on the lap of a creepy tumescent Texan self-proclaimed billionaire on his electric wheelchair. One of our new songs tackles death and the contradicting feelings one has when letting go of a loved one - wanting their peace but also avoiding your pain by extending theirs. “Thick Piss”, satirizes over-fetishizing misanthropy and “lice”, the ultimate tragedy and violence of the American Dream and the selfish virtue it perpetuates. Still, it was a pretty pancake dream.
3. What is your favorite song to play live and why?
Tom: It's usually the newest one. Always excited to play new material plus the adrenaline is always up not wanting to mess it up. Makes it more exciting. “Thick Piss” is super fun too.
Rocky: Yeah. The newest one. Right now that would be the death one. Working title: luxurious beds and linens. I think it is the most emotional one to perform so far. I also like playing “lice” because it has so many dynamics - melodic, contemplative, then angry - repeat.
4. What is the biggest mistake you’ve made as a band so far?
Tom: I don’t know if we have made any mistakes. We accept that we are a slow moving entity with the busy lives we all have. As such, things take a little bit of time. We are very efficient with the time we have together, and I couldn’t be happier with our output and accomplishments so far. Especially the new ep.
Rocky: Or too many to recall? Naw. I regret nothing. It’s been a joy.
5. If you could tour anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go?
Tom: For me, I think it would be Europe. There is a great appreciation and respect for music there. Relatively short drives where the culture and scenery change so much from country to country. I have 2 desires with touring. To see and play places I have yet to be, and experience new things. As well revisit places I’ve been to reconnect with old friends.
6. What is the first album each of you remembers buying with your own money?
Tom: Walking into a store and buying would be SNFU’s if you swear you’ll catch no fish. Otherwise I had a pretty sick Columbia House membership/collection previous to that.
Rocky: I don’t fucking remember. I remember being at HMV around the time with my first “period” money and buying Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing Shocking, and Ace of Base, All That She Wants or The Sign - one of those was the title.
7. What’s next for this band after this show?
Tom: We are working towards completing a full length. I would like to record that next year. Play some more fun shows, and stretch out a little further from home. Hopefully get into some cool festivals.
