INTERVIEW - OCEANS UNDER STARS
INTERVIEW - OCEANS UNDER STARS

Who are the members of the band and what does each person play?
Our lineup is Barrett Klesko on vocals and guitar, Jono Webster on drums, Braden Ramstead on guitar and vocals, and Ryan Berehulke on bass. Each of us brings a different creative instinct to the project and the sound grows out of those contrasts.
How would you classify your music and what is the album called?
We call ourselves grungegaze. It blends dark shoegaze with alternative and metal influences. The sound is heavy and immersive, built on atmosphere, emotion, and texture. Our new album is titled A Nameless Fear in a Barren Land. It feels like walking across unfamiliar terrain where the landscape shifts as you take each step. That sense of movement shaped the entire record.
What do you have released right now?
We have seven singles out so far, each one revealing a different side of the album. Today we released our newest single and music video for Walking in Shadows. The full album will be released physically on November twenty eighth and digitally on December nineteenth.
Is there any inspiration behind the band?
The band grew from a shared interest in exploring the parts of ourselves that rarely show up in daily life. The lyrics move through memory, identity, and the shifting space between clarity and distortion. The music is not meant to give answers. It is meant to invite the listener into an emotional landscape where they can interpret their own meaning.
What are your plans for 2026?
We have accepted an offer to tour Japan this summer and we are excited to bring the album overseas. We also have several festival appearances confirmed that we will announce when permitted, along with a run of Western Canadian shows. We are preparing limited edition physical releases such as vinyl and extended versions. We also expect to record new material later this year for a follow up EP or album.
What would be your dream collaboration?
Working with Butch Vig would be a dream for us. His ability to create sound that feels powerful, emotional, and human matches the direction we continue to grow toward.
What is your favorite part of the Edmonton music scene and is there anything it needs?
My favorite part is the resilience. Any band that survives and succeeds in Edmonton has earned it through determination and consistency. The city is isolated from major industry hubs and the market is challenging, yet artists continue to push forward. The scene needs continued support for the venues that keep live music alive. They are essential for the community.
What advice would you give new artists?
Only feed what truly serves your artistic vision. Do not reduce your originality to reach more people and do not complicate your work just to appear more profound. Trust the ideas that feel honest to you. Your voice is the one thing no one else can offer.
Anything else you want viewers to know?
We are currently fundraising for our Japan tour. Travel costs are high and the financial return is modest, so every piece of merch helps us take another step toward getting overseas. Every sale brings us a few dollars closer to making the tour possible.
