INTERVIEW - THE KNOT NO HOWZ

INTERVIEW - THE KNOT NO HOWZ ALBERTA INTERVIEW MUSIC BANDS YEG

1. How did The Knot No Howz first come together?

The  Knot No Howz began as an air band opening for a real band at a  Halloween hall in about party in 2006-2007. Consisting of Wes Retzlaff,  Kris Hurst and the late Rhett Bubel. Complete with costumes, crazy light  show and lots of fog machine. They performed. They had groupies…I was  one of them ( my Halloween costume was a lanyard that said VIP. ) The  real band went on after playing Rock, and blues. I don’t remember what  they were called  just remember the fun and awesomeness of The Knot No  Howz. A fun time had by all. It was really entertaining and funny just  like the guys were but tragically Rhett had passed away. In 2017 Kris  Hurst, Wes Restzlaff and his son Jake Hubbard they began jamming and  wanted to resurrect The Knot No Howz but as a real band this time. They  began jamming in our basement in Bruderheim many nights a week. Writing  and playing real songs. But it got to the point where I was like if you  guys want to keep jamming you have to let me join too. I wanted to play  too and had some music experience and song ideas too. So they let me   join  (Green Noreen Hurst), and we jammed until we thought we could  pull off throwing some hall party shows in our little town.

2. How would you describes your sound to someone frost hearing your music?

I would say we’re best described as a special blend of psychedelic, stoner, punk , rock.

3. What are biggest musical influences and how did they shape us?

We’re  influenced by The smalls, SNFU, The Misfits, Bif Naked, Ruby the  Hatchet, Amyl and the Sniffers. The sounds we grew up with and the  sounds of the stuff we’re listening to today has influenced in some of  the writing and sounds. We like to write some fun songs and also stuff  that comes places of healing wounds, overcoming addictions and grief.  The music ultimately has been a way to channel feelings and put it into  music transmuting the pain into something constructive and positive.

4. What inspired the concept and theme behind What?

When  The Knot No Howz first began we had decided on theme. The theme was the  5 W’s …Who? What? When? Where? Why? And sometimes How? And to question  everything Everything is not as it seems. See thru the bullshit.

5. What track stands out and the story behind it is.

I  would say Pacific Rim. Fun Fact is this songs lyrics were written for a  contest for Pacific Rim Hotel and I never submit it Glad we kept it for  ourselves. It’s all about the beautiful B.C coast. The ocean, the  waves, the fresh air, the sand, the sun and that feeling of sheer  happiness being there. I can’t wait to go back again.

5. What was our most memorable performance and why?

Momentsfest 2022 was our absolute favourite. From the beautiful drive  down, pulling into the festival grounds and the overwhelming beauty and  energy of the Pow wow arbour. When we were pulling in they had music  playing over the PA before festival began. They were playing a mix of  bands that played at Alt Waves. So while we were pulling into the  grounds we could hear one of our songs blaring from the PA. It honestly  felt like a beautiful welcoming to the festival and that we knew we  where we were supposed to be.

The festival was so  truly beautiful and moving beginning with an Elders blessing. It was an  inclusive, dry festival, and all ages. Many many rad bands on the bill.  The bands that began the event were these young kids that absolutely  slayed and shredded while everyone’s jaws dropped and hit the ground.  I’m talking kids playing Metallica and Megadeth better than Hatfield and  Mustane it was really uplifting and inspiring. To be on the same bill  as Dayglo Abortions was pretty stellar. A band we all grew up listening  to. But the icing on the cake was getting to meet Murray Acton and shoot  the shit with him. I told him when I last saw Dayglo play at the Rebar  in the mid 90’s and he remembered that show. I told how I was too afraid  to mosh at that one cause all the broken glass and the floors felt like  they were collapse. That festival was definitely the most memorable.

6. What message and feeling do we hope listeners will take away this release?

Be  yourself , don’t take no shit, don’t give up , live life to the  fullest, enjoy every moment cause tomorrow isn’t promised to anyone.
