INTERVIEW - REVENANT SUN

INTERVIEW - REVENANT SUN

Answering members are: Justin Loran - Lead Guitar and Terry Kaz (Vocals)

Q: What inspired the story behind your new single Build to Burn?

A: (Terry) It s a song about realizing I’d built something special without knowing it, and only understood what it was once I was watching it burn.

That gap between having something and actually seeing it…. That’s the song…

Q: How does Got Your Gun represent the band's sound and direction?

A: (Justin) This is actually one of our earliest songs, but I think it hints at the direction that we were kind of always bound to go in. Despite our initial intent to be slower and heavier, there's some bounce to this one and I can hear a lot of 60's british invasion stuff and early 90's-era Social Distortion in it.

(Terry) Like Justin said, it was one our earliest songs when we initially formed as a band. It was the first time we got to hear what our fusion of styles could sound like and it was a sound we built off of.

Q: As a band from Leduc, Alberta, how has the local music scene shaped Revenant Sun?

A: (Justin) The lack of any real scene here has been both a hindrance and help, in some ways. On one hand, it's been challenging to find people here who want to do anything other than classic rock covers. On the other, there's never been any pressure to fit anywhere or sound like anything.

Q: What do you hope fans take away from your lyrics?

A: (Terry) My themes are generally consequence without pity, growth through the death of who you used to be and facing the monster inside vice running from it.

It's dark, but it’s not nihilistic. There’s always hope in there, because facing the truth and growing through pain is one of the most human things you can do.

I try to keep my words open enough so that people can pour their own stuff into them, project their circumstance onto what I’m singing, because that’s the kind of catharsis music gave me growing up… if I can do that for just one person, that’s the whole point.

Q: How would you describe the chemistry between the current lineup?

A: (Justin) Organic, in that all of are us are carbon-based and, despite dedicating a lot of time to it, I don't feel any closer to actually understanding how it actually works.

(Terry) Justin and I worked really well together right away. We don't have much in common stylistically, but we seem to compliment each other rather than clash. Dalton (bass) and Josh (drums) jumped in and brought their unique sound to the band. I'm excited for our future releases.

Q: What's next for Revenant Sun after the current run of shows?

(Justin) A new single, Stretching Truths, releases on all streaming platforms on September 24th. Its our first studio track.

(Terry) We're back in the studio to record two more singles at the end of September, and again in early December. We have lots coming out and we hope to book more shows in the near future. Thanks!
