JR PRESENTZ (LOCAL VIDEOGRAPHER) - INTERVIEW

What first got you into shooting videos in Edmonton, and what keeps you inspired in this scene?
I moved out here for a better life for me and my two kids, i’m from Spruce Grove. There isn’t much going on out there except for a blue collar work so to do what I’m doing there wasn’t much opportunities for me, so I had to move and expand my horizons and go to the unknown and step far out of my comfort zone with meeting new people and new situations that I’ve never been in before.
How would you describe your visual style ?
I would say even though I mostly use an iPhone these days it still professional with inspiration from the life I experienced, from growing up with hip-hop rap videos, to all types of different genres of movies that I’ve watched over the years and the different animes/ cartoons that I’ve read and saw because with the vivid imagination I have because of those it helps me with the ideas, the transitions and whole process in general
What’s your process when an artist comes to you with a new song, how do you turn that track into a visual concept?
I have them send me the track and I listen to it over and over until I know the lyrics and the beat off by heart, and I usually close my eyes and try to envision some sort of idea or thought that would springboard into more ideas to bring out the creativity and then I suggested to the artist what we should do and see what their ideas are and then we collaborate and Storyboard on the overall project, we either mash ideas together, or they put full trust in my vision and let me have creative control and full anatomy in what we’re trying to achieve for the video / content
Are there any Edmonton artists or locations that have really shaped your work?
Every one of the artist that I’ve worked with have definitely shaped my work and help me grow as much as I’ve helped them, but to name a few the Las Vegas artist is who now lives in Edmonton Basé, TwoYoung and his brother Arrow C who just sadly past recently , T5madedis, my Cousin Orville Havana who goes by the name Wayz has been a really big inspiration for me, and surprisingly, this musician named Jananie listening to her, and seeing her performing her music live was an experience that really opened up my eyes to be more open to more then just rappers
What’s one rap video you’ve shot that you’re especially proud of, and why does it stand out to you?
now that’s a tuff one, I would have to say the latest one I did which is “P2G - by Basé “ just because I’m always proudest of my latest projects because I know I pushed myself each time I do something but one video that I’m especially proud of and actually brings me so much joy is the video that I got my kids to do , I referred to them always as my bosses so I got them to play different roles in a video as employees of my company, I had fun making it They had fun making it I even let my son swear in it so I know he enjoyed that. That is 100% definitely the video I’m most proud of.
How do you balance the artist’s vision with your own creative ideas during a shoot?
we usually bring ideas together and then collaborate and see what goes with the vision that we’re shooting for most artists Let me do my own thing cause I have trust in me and if they have a certain idea or vision then we just kind of stick to what they wanna do in that, but for the most part, all the artist and people that I’ve worked with really have their trust in me so once we kinda get the overall idea, they just let me do my thing, for me That’s really big that they are able to trust me in that aspect
What advice would you give to local rappers who want to make a professional rap video?
I would say just create no matter what it is art, music, business, just create with passion and always have fun with it ( you get the best results that way ) and hit me up or give me a call if you want to do a stress-free lol
