What advice would you give new artists?
Take time and money to record and do it right. Gigs are fun, but recordings are what you have left afterwards (and they help you get gigs). Also, you need to be a jack of all trades or find people to help. This includes trying to self-promote, even if it sucks and feels weird.
If you can't do it, find a friend who wants to cut their chops at PR or artist management and get them to help, or you can always take seminars or courses that pop up from various organizations. Music orgs like Alberta Music are there to help. Use the resources and work as hard as you can! Paying your dues is a real thing, and the work you put in when you're young will continue to pay off exponentially as you move along in your career.
Finally, your reputation is the most important thing you have direct control over - be respectful, kind and easy to work with. That will also pay off!
