PROFILE - Sour Patch Men

PROFILE - Sour Patch Men

Who are the members of and what do they play?

we typically range from 3-8 members, but for this album we have Bryce Willigar on mandolin, Derek Walz on drums and vest frottoir, Alex Klipper on Banjo, Matthew Lowe on Upright Bass, Avery Mitchell on guitar, Mitchell Strasser on a different guitar, and Kat Kerr on fiddle.

How would you classify your music?

We describe ourselves as gleeful indie folk with an anarchic edge.

Is there any inspiration for the band?

yes, several! We like to say that we are to Appalachian and western folk music what the Poques were to Celtic music. But with a touch of Zappa-esque irreverence.

What are your plans for 2025?

We drop the digital version of the album on September 24 and then in November we have a special show planned for our vinyl release. A legendary local band, the actual best band in Bowness, is coming out of retirement to play a set-within-a-set, in reference to the title track of our album in which they play a song-within-a-song.. Naturally that show will be in Bowness. That will be a kick-off show for a tour, during which we will be bringing art and products made by Bowness residents. So essentially we are making a travelling market of Bownesian goods, with our vinyl as the centerpiece.

What would be your dream collaboration?

Our dream collaboration would be with a comic book creator who would make comics about a group of plucky adventurers who for esoteric reasons are called "The Sour Patch Men" and travel the universe battling aliens and interdimensional beings. Ideally there would also be a spin-off called "Teeny Bopper Patchbabiez" that would feature them as teenagers roaming the neighbourhood getting into hilarious

mischief.

What's your favorite anime?

Ok this may be a bit of a cop-out answer but the answer is One Piece. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if Oda Sensei sticks the landing on the ending, he will have created a towering masterpiece of story-telling rivalling the great epic poems and classical novels of antiquity.

What advice would you give new artists?

Nobody has a clue what they're doing. The secret of faking it 'til you make it is that, even after you make it, you have to keep faking it. So get out there and make some art that resonates with yourself and don't worry about silly things like rules and what other people are doing or thinking.

Anything else you want the viewers to know?

Umm yes please, I think I would like them to know, if they don't already, that consciousness is a complete mystery that seems to be a rough map of reality, and language is a rough map of our consciousness, so there's no point in getting too hung-up on disagreements.. Oh and also there are some species of monkeys that can have three biological parents. That's a cool fact. Marmosets, they're called. Just in case you're wondering.
