PROFILE - TallBoy

How did the band form, and what’s the story behind your name?

So originally when we were looking for band names we had thrown out jokes of us all being tall guys, then the more we thought about it we liked the idea of being associated with the Tallboy  beer size. Then when we researched it some more we came across the old British bomb from world war 2 called the Tallboy and we thought that would make a cool logo. So we used it for our first gigs as a cover band and it stuck with us ever since. Now we have become accustomed to people seeing us at the end of the show and saying "So tallboy is that because you are all tall?" yes, yes it is.

How would you describe your musical style, and who are your biggest influences?

When we think of TallBoy we think of rock music that has come out of Alberta, Nickelback being the biggest, so we like to draw on that and call ourselves Northern Rock. Other big influences were bands like Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Eagles, Tragically Hip, Creed, Kings of Leon,

What’s your creative process like when writing new music?

A lot of our creative process comes from just playing together all the time, most rehearsals start off with some type of jam that can start from anyone in the band. If something is sounding good we will quickly record it and put it in the demo folder. Othertimes Curtis (lead singer) will bring in a chord progression and lyrics that he has been working on typically on an acoustic guitar and then the rest of the band starts coming up with parts and ideas of how to shape the song into our brand. Everyone in the band really enjoys a wide variety of music and we try to write from all those angles and not get too attached to one type of feel. Still very much in our early stages of writing though we all walked away from our second recording session seeing a big move forward in our song writing so we are very excited for everyone to hear our new records.

What has been your most memorable live show or tour experience so far?

Most people who have seen us probably know that we do both cover band gigs and original shows, we have played all over Canada. One of our favorite nights is probably playing the Blue Gator in Kelowna, we were doing a mini tour through the okanagan and landed in Kelowna mid july on a saturday night and we blew the lid off the place. It was probably 30 degrees inside with no A/C but we had bachelor parties and even a bride and groom showed up in their full get up dancing with us till 2am. We also had a great show out in Hamilton, Ontario right after we released our first single Life of Sin. That was a big moment for us too as we began our change to playing more original music. Lastly, we always need to mention The Starlite room, it has been a staple for touring and local bands to get on that stage where we have watched so many great bands before us. Our first show there back in September of 2024 was a huge one for us and will always be a night we remember. So we are incredibly grateful to have a venue like the Starlite room who continues to be a backbone in the Edmonton music scene as a place musicians strive to play.

What’s next for the band—any upcoming projects or goals you’re excited about?

Right now we are in full release mode. We just released our first single off the new EP. Song is called Desire, it is out now on all platforms. We have 4 more singles we will be releasing, trying our best to market ourselves which is always a difficult thing as an independent band. We are trying to follow in the footsteps of bands like Whale and the Wolf and Royal Tusk, and would love to start opening up for some bigger bands touring through town. Once the full EP is out we will be doing a big show in town and start applying for festivals in 2026.

Thanks for doing this, always nice to do a colab.
