What's your name and where are you from
My name is Kelsey McMillan and I perform as Kip Lily. I'm born and raised in Alberta, I grew up in the country near the river.
How long have you been creating music
Since I was a kid, learning covers of pop and country songs on guitar and piano. I loved to sing but was a very shy young person and found performing to be really nerve wracking. I sang alto in a choir as an adult and absorbed a lot of musical understanding through singing with others. In 2020 when everything shut down, I started journalling everyday in order to stay sane, and a lot of that writing blossomed into songs that I eventually felt compelled to perform. Once things opened up again I played lots of open mics around town, it really helped me workshop my songs and get more comfortable sharing and being heard.
How would you classify your music
It's a little bit folk, perhaps flower femme dark country, maybe it will become a bit art pop once the songs get recorded. It's definitely still evolving.
What's your primary inspiration either musical or not
Nature and people, inner and outer landscapes. I'm often thinking about cycles, the peace and viciousness of predators and prey, and the sounds and textures of water and dirt and wind and fire. I also like thinking about people's relationship dynamics and how they reflect the contrasts of the natural world.
What are your plans for the near future
Recording my first album and playing
