> I got a chance to catch up with Terrence and Nolan of the melodic
> hardcore band All Was Lost outside the Starlite Room and talked about
> inspirations, history and future projects. Thanks again so much to the
> whole band for making time for us and we cant wait to see them play
> next! (Starlite Room June 2)
>
>
> I will just start names and what you do in the band?
>
>
> T Sure. Terrence. I'm the lead vocalist. I write the lyrics. Yeah.
> Jump around on stage like maniac.
>
>
> N And I'm Nolan, and I'm the guitarist, I play guitar.
>
>
> So how long have you guys been together as a group?
>
>
> T So the new lineup, I want to say, that Nolan and Dale
> enjoyed in August.
>
>
> T- Somewhere around there.
>
>
> N Yeah, beginning of August, kind of.And then we've kind of just been
> collaborating since then. The only original member, actually. But,
> yeah, they picked it up
> super quick. They're playing parts that actually, to be honest, where
> it's actually played live.
> Like some of the really clean guitar parts that were actually just
> more of a background. Like, they picked up, and they're
> doing it all. It's really impressive.
>
>
> What kind of genre would you classify AiL?
>
>
>
> T Want to take this one?
>
>
> N Metal core. For sure. Just like just straight up metal core. I don't
> know. I'm sure there'll be more kind of genres that we try to tap into
> going forward. Like, kind of maybe genting it up.
> A little bit, too.
>
>
> T I'd say we're gently right now, like, in some little stuff. I'd also
> throw in the word melodic.
>
>
> N Yeah, for sure.
>
>
> T There's, like, all those melody parts, right? Like, the really cool
> guitar parts and the chord chords and stuff.
>
>
>
> N I guess metal core with it. Maybe some more gents coming down the
> pipes. We'll see.
>
>
> Have you guys both been in bands before him?
>
>
> N More so than any of us, me and. Tried starting a couple of projects
> with people, it
> didn't end up really getting off the ground. So I would say Terrence
> is the most experienced of us all.
>
>
> T So I got a bit of a I can do a bit of a synopsis. So Chris is in a
> couple of different projects down in Calgary. And I'm going to get it
> wrong, so sorry, Chris, but I know that he's in kind of like a rock
> group and he's played fill in drums for other musicians down there,
> but he's never really been in a full full band like this before
> either.
>
>
> Landon has written music, like, most of his life. He actually did a
> project called Double Double that was more acoustic based. But this is
> like he's been writing metal for so long, this is his first ever time
> playing live metal music, so he's pretty stoked about that, too I know
> he'd say that if he was here. And then Nolan and Daley and you guys
> had something before.
>
>
> N We had a project going with the current vocalist of The Judge and
> Juror, actually. And then we were trying to get members. We had a
> solid lineup for a couple of months and then everybody just kind of
> bailed. They had kind of other stuff they wanted to do, which is fine.
> That kind of happens, and we ended up finding Terrence.
>
>
> T So my first band, I was in a band called Here Lies Elizabeth.
> I was like 19 years old. It was like your typical emo screamo, not
> even metal core, like more like chiadosi at times. And then after that
> I joined a band called For Reasons Lost, which was basically like
> Parkway 2.0 meets august Burns Red of Edmonton And then after that I
> did like a kind of melodic, hardcore, sort of like counterpart ghost
> insidey stuff called Ride in paradise.
>
>
> That band was the longest one I was in outside of Always Lost and the
> only one I've ever toured in outside of what we're going to be doing
> this summer. All with Loss and then I went back to school. So I did
> like a side project called Beyond Struggle. And then when I got out of
> school, as I was coming out of it, I did the first WTHCVTN EP and then
> I left the band and
> Sabian took over as a vocalist and I actually yeah, there's little
> hidden things.
>
>
> And then I did another sort of melodic hardcore band called Upworth
> that was really counterparts in with old prophets, counterparts
> influenced, and then that sort of fell through. It was like it was
> really heartbreaking. Now I'm in. All is Lost. I've been doing this
> since I was 18-19, on and off.
>
>
> Any kind of inspiration, musical or non musical.
>
>
> N I guess, like just trying to emulate bands that we listen to. Just
> kind of a lot of new stuff lately. Both me and the other guitarists
> are big fans of Event, animate North Lane novelists. Just bands like
> that kind of thing. And that's going forward, the vibes we're going to
> kind of try to touch on a little bit, but obviously with a splash of
> our ownwriting style and everything like that.
>
>
> But yeah, like kind of bands of that Calgary. Like a lot of new kind
> of metal core bands, kind of gent bands and stuff. I think everybody
> loves periphery and just stuff like that. A lot of your heavy hitters
> and I just listen to a bunch of different kind of music too.
>
>
> I have since I was in high school. So maybe see some of those
> influences coming. But yeah, for the most part, mostly just
> kind of new metal core stuff is our main attraction. Stuff for sure.
> And the tribe sent me.
>
>
>
> T I know Chris has. Like one of his favorite bands because he's a
> drummer, of course, his Animals. Yeah. And then Landon is
> really heavily influenced by, like, Prague and, like, death metal and
> stuff. So, yeah, like, we got a mix of different, like, genre,
> inspiration.
>
> I'm, like, under oath. Ghosts inside Parkway Drive. Like old school
> stuff. But I, like, grew up on it. But I love the new stuff too. Like,
> I love, like, Thousand Below, like, all those doing the same stuff.
>
>
>
> Anything about the new album?
>
>
> T Yeah, it's exciting. It's finally coming out after.
>
>
> Yeah. Last I heard, it was delayed a little bit.
>
>
> T It's delayed by a month, which is much sooner than it's been delayed in the
>
> past. So there has been a recorded demo version of this album since
> September well, November of 2020.
>
>
> That's how long I've been able to listen to this album and know what.
> It'S supposed to sound like. But then with all the ebbs and. Slows and
> changes with COVID and everything that hit us in the world, it hasn't
> come out.
>
>
> So it's a big deal for us. That it's actually finally coming out. So
> it's got to be pushed back by a month so that we can kind of do it
> right, try and get on some playlist. Because we have one other song
> still mixed and master.
>
>
> And I won't won't say it on. Here, but we're like 95% that there's
> going to be a guest feature on the record that we're kind of waiting.
> They just haven't had enough time. And I can tell you right now.
>
>
> That if it works out to be a dream come true because the guest
> vocalist is, like, one of my biggest. Inspiration.
>
>
> You guys are doing a. Release show for that?
>
>
> T Yeah. Awesome. That will be at the Starlight.
>
>
> Yeah, it's actually we got the main room. Shout out to Dexter from
> Medical Pilot. Yeah, yeah. We got selling 400 tickets. Guys, come out.
>
>
> What day is it?
>
>
> T June 2.
>
>
> Anything else you want to add?
>
>
> T You know, like, it's not just Edmonton.
>
> We're going to be hitting west in Canada this summer. So, like,
> Camloo, Kelowna, Vancouver. So medicine hats going to be
>
> the Always Music Festival? We're going to do bands the same weekend as
> we do that.
>
>
> And then we're going to go up to Saskatoon. Regina got a Calgary date
> on the day of our CD release, which will actually be
>
> like, May 27. Busy, busy plan.
>
>
> Awesome.
>
