F&M Dance Danse Review

Getting lost in the melodies of this album is a joy and drifting

thoughts turn from spreadsheets and email to a walk in the river

valley. This ep is a journey into what F&M have been up to for the

past couple years as the first two entries were recorded way back in

the before times while Dance Danse is quite post pandemic, cautiously

optimistic. The trio of songs are a taster of what this band is

capable of while also not limiting them to a particular genre. This is

also not their first release by far so I very much encourage

exploration into their current library.

The EP starts off in a pleasant mood accented by the upbeat vibe and

French background vocals. Rebeccas vocals are on great display

bouncing and consistent while not overpowering. This is a Thursday

morning at the office wishing it was the weekend song. Marching along

Joyful Melancholy sings like an old timey pub or fireside story. Folk

punk jokes aside it sounds great and while it sounds downbeat the

lyrics confirm the oppositeness of the songs title. I felt confused on

how I should feel while listening to this and I’m almost certain

that’s intentional.

Dance Danse is quite a bit more poppy with a euro twang. Upbeat

harmony dance punk gets your toes tapping while funky guitar riffs

match the precisely positioned piano pieces. This hit is radio ready

and my favorite of the album, maybe it’s the background samples or 3rd

act pause but either way I feel its more complete than the others.

This is personally the direction I think F&M are there strongest in,

maybe its my own vintage speaking but I think the world needs more of

this. The 90’s is over but millennials like myself are craving that

sound bad.

I’ve listened to this EP and some of their back albums now numerous

times and its found a place in my daily routine. They’re an easy band

to like and the chill melodies and smooth vocals are something I, and

perhaps others, need right now. If your in the Edmonton area they’re

playing coming up at Kaffa April 7 and I highly recommend you check

them out. I’ll be there with my eyes closed, sipping an americano and

listening to some serene tunes.
