What's your name and where are you from
My name is Jesse Crowley, and I’m from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
How long have you been creating music
I’ve been creating music since I was conceived, I believe. I’ve got early memories of my nose whistling with snot while I was laying in my crib, just tossing some rhythm on the bars at the same time, it sounded so good the rest of the babies in the nursery wept.
For real though, I started playing music around nine. Tried and failed with writing songs until sixteen, until I penned my first smash hit with my high school’s grad song, which is still my peak in life, I think. Who knows, maybe another peak is around the corner. raises eyebrows
How would you classify your music
I play esoteric dream pop, but sometimes it’s the bad ones, the nightmares, that are the foundation of the songs. Sometimes the songs are like a dream where you think it’s a good dream but it ends up slowly morphing into a nightmare. Maybe you start to understand the dream was actually a nightmare the entire time and you hadn’t quite had a handle on that yet, where Aunt Bertha with the lampshade on her head is actually far more sinister of a character than you had once realized. That’s a pretty good description of my music, I believe.
What's your primary inspiration either musical or not
I find the space and substance that dreams exist within to be the ripest soil for my music. I have had songs that I’ve written to expunge a residual element of a nightmare that was left on the ol’ nervous system. I’ve had songs come out of the dream that that’s burned into the psyche after you experience something new and beautiful for the first time and you get to keep it, like a gem. I have songs come from the dreams that were already in my brain on repeat before I was born.
What are your plans for the near future
My plans are to continue personifying the archetype of the rockabilly sage. It’s not all fun and games, but it is a little bit.
Anything else you want your fans to know
The First Humans, my solo project’s debut release, Stunned, is out June 30th! I’ve produced it with my friend, Aaron Sabourin, so I’m excited to share that, and some subsequent singles in the rest of the calendar year. Follow @thefirsthumans on Instagram for updates and show announcements!
