For everyone- growing up is stressful. As a kid, you dream of everything you wish you could be,
and life being a product of perfection.
Of course, as we grow up we come to the understanding that life is full of endless possibilities.
The idea of “perfection” outgrows you faster than you can; and even faster than you can
understand it.
“A Brighter Sound”, is to me, a product of Nathaniel growing up. Growing up through music,
from music for films in 2018- to a vulnerable and brilliant new EP.
With Nathaniel Sutton’s latest EP, “A Brighter Sound”, he puts into his perspective on how he
managed to cope from these imperfections; and how through music, Nathaniel manages to put
these images of heartbreak and grief of a long term relationship into words.
Starting off with the first track “Razorblades”, the significance of the grief is conveyed through
the striking intro and strong vocals. Part of what I find extremely impressive about these tracks
are how Nathaniel presents the damage he’s endured. Grief is a notable part to how his lyrics
express himself; and with what he’s gone through it is admirable to see how he works through it
with his music. It is as though you get the same gut-wrecking punch as if you went through it too
with how he tells his story.
From “Animals” to “All Night”, it felt almost as if the pain drifted into depression. Nathaniel starts
to fall into a depression stage in heartbreak, and the vocals express the mourning he goes
through without someone by his side. To me, the way Nathaniel writes these feelings of grief
and mourning are absolutely my favorite part of the EP’s tracks. The way the words are picked
in his songs are so crucial to the story- and play a huge part in how it all pieces emotions
together.
Portrayed in “In Ruins” and “The Metaphor”, the tracks so perfectly conclude my thoughts about
this EP. I absolutely love it.
While writing the review, I found myself coming back to these ending tracks displaying
production and guitar. Mixed with the vocals, the soft guitar perfected the feeling of struggling to
move on; but doing so anyways. It all illustrates how pain doesn’t truly have to last forever, even
with ongoing struggle. "A Brighter Sound” is representative of hope after adversity.
I sincerely hope that whoever feels as though they are relating to this EP knows that there
always is A Brighter Sound. Life will not always be In Ruins.
Two simple ways of doing that is to check out the EP Release Show happening on Friday, June
2nd at Felice Cafe w/ Von Bieker, or stream “A Brighter Sound”!
