Rekt Betties Review!!

Heavy Sessions by Rekt Betties Album Review by @georgiag1900

The rock band Rekt Betties has been a staple in the Edmonton music scene for the past

couple of years, playing at some of the most iconic venues and jamming along with a multitude

of other bands. The four piece band also goes by their 80’s prog rock tribute bands name

Rattpoison as well as their hit playing party band Alter-Ego. Rekt Betties released their first

collection of singles in 2019, and have gone on to release an album titled Heavy Sessions in the

summer of 2023. They’ve played venues such as Blues on Whyte, SOHO YEG Bar, On The

Rocks, as well as many other classic Edmonton spots.

In the powerful opening track to the album Heavy Sessions, Give Me Something Heavy

sets the stage for the entirety of Rekt Betties sound. It's heavy and gritty, yet classy. The vocals

from Betty VanWailin are high octane and controlled, especially in the introduction and finale,

and the background vocals are a beautiful touch. The lyrics blend into the music and provide a

commentary on wanting something more sophisticated from the current state of rock and roll.

The guitar solos throughout not only this track but the entire album takes inspiration from their

previous staggering singles, providing a recognizable theme towards their entire discography.

Church of the Broken Hearted embraces the glam and classic rock aesthetic, with a

catchy chorus and amazing guitar riffs throughout. The melody and flow throughout creates a

memorable rhythm. The following track Running with the Wolves Again rolls seamlessly with the

80’s tone, setting the scene with the vocals and experimental use of instruments. It is by far the

most danceable track and will definitely be sung along to at any future live show events. This

track heightens the danger associated with classic rock and roll songs, while still instilling that

modern twist that Rekt Betties is so great at creating.

The star track on this album Dark Lullabies is an amazing versatile blend of dark and

rock aesthetics. This is far different than anything Rekt Betties has put together before, and with

that it is very unique. The buildup throughout the track creates such a strong and professional

production that will leave a lasting effect on the audience. The lyrics generate a sense of longing

and desire, with the melody flowing in and out between words, giving them enough space but

also amplifying their effect.

The finale to the album Love Songs for the Lonely takes another shift in a new direction.

It carries a playful melody and turns into an early 2000’s inspired ballad. It still continues with the

powerful vocals and background work. A great closeout to the album Heavy Sessions and a

wonderful introduction to Rekt Betties.
